Bianca’s Monster Truck Review; Short and Sweet

By Bianca Marques

Hamilton-based band Monster Truck opened for Billy Talent last week at the Bell Center. Four hairy beasts that make up the band appeared on stage. Within  seconds of starting to play – these guys were nothing short of amazing! After the show, the merch table was the place to be. The band’s EP – a must have !

albumThe four song disc is pure rock’n’roll with a twist of metal. The lead singer has a vocal range comparable to almost any 70’s styled Robert Plant wannabe. The only thing missing? A breakout into the  Immigrant Song …

Monster Truck is meant to be listened to LOUD. No sissy earbuds, no standard computer speakers; listen to them on big booming speakers and the music will pulse through your body. The full effect will grab you by the ears and not let go! Their sound – reminiscent of Deep Purple.

First song on the Monster Truck EP is called Lethal Weapon Cop Car which is best described as a get-up-and-go song.  It’s hard to keep still listening to this song, it compels you to move, maybe jump up on the furniture and do a great air-guitar. The keyboard and guitar own this song with a higher pitch contrasting the deep booming drums.

Next on the menu, Death Mistake; a slightly slower paced song. A driving song. Cruise around town and try to stop hitting your head on the windshield as a head nods in beat with the drums. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen in Wayne’s World? Close …

The lead singer’s strong voice really shows through in the third song, entitled Runnin. The keyboard compliments the voice and the guitars and drums take the back seat.

The final song, Space Nebula is worthy of cranking up to eleven! It starts with a solid build up, then pumps out the drums, vocals and guitar to maximum rock capacity!
