The ‘corporate’ bands attract the large audiences while the real singers, musicians and artists attract respect.

Andy Kim brought his friends in music to Montreal for his tenth annual Andy Kim Christmas in Montreal. Proceeds went to The Starlight Children’s Foundation of Canada.

It was a show that was soulful. It was a show that was perfect sound-wise. It was a show that made everyone leave not only in the Christmas spirit – in a mood to give back to society. Andy’s heart given to the musicians onstage and then exchanged with the audience. The energy magically gluing the night together.

A new band from Montreal named meds started things off. Seeds among the perennials. An outfit who, despite their young ages, performed as seasoned professionals. Non threatening music in a small set which displayed a billboard in people’s minds which read; Attention! Promising young bad ahead. Watch your step!
meds – the beginning of the show, the beginning of a career.

Sometimes a music concert – as beautiful as it may be or sound, can take itself too seriously within a range of profound craftsmanship. The focus is on the songs and the entertainment aspect gets lost. Few artists can combine the two elements as well as Ivan Doroschuk from Men Without Hats. Seemingly at the perfect time, Ivan writhed, danced and bemused the audience as well as himself. Ivan’s stage presence combined with the ultra Pop hits Safety Dance and Pop Goes the World – a marriage of ‘everything’ that is right in the music scene.

Ron Sexsmith and Andy Kim formed a friendship twenty – odd years ago. A kinship that started in a song collaboration which has endured. Ron being the only constant guest at the Andy Kim Christmas concerts for (twenty years in Toronto) ten years in Montreal. Kim and Sexsmith both write songs from the soul and their connection apparent on their duet as well in each solo song they perform. Andy has received several songwriting and Canadian accolades over the years and one day – Sexsmith will match those tributes easily.

Sarah Harmer, Murray Lightburn (The Dears) and Montreal’s own The Damn Truth each added to the evening. Both Sarah and Murray’s vocal prowess left most in attendance with their jaws near their knees. Their acoustic perfection on their guitars as sublime as silk sending shivers over skin.

The Damn Truth, Montreal’s The Damn Truth, powered their way into the hearts of the audience. Menacing riffs and shrieking vocals reminded everyone why the band have become Montreal’s most successful Rock outfit.
It is Christmas season after all, somebody had to spike the eggnog.
