For The Cult – it’s all about a Cult.
At MTelus on a balmy Wednesday evening, a packed house of diehard fans welcomed original members Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy (along with their ‘cult’) with mostly black t-shirts embodied with dark graphics or words. Monkey see monkey do.

Astbury led the pack onstage and off in an Aboriginal grand chief ‘shaman’ way. Conducting songs such as ‘Rise’, ‘Fire Woman’ and ‘Dirty Little Rock Star’ along with the classic ‘She Sells Sanctuary’. Astbury has always marched to his own ‘tamborine’ – an enigma as far as frontmen go. Astbury remains Astbury as Duffy is Duffy. The one two punch is unique in music history.

The Cult ‘live’ are a continuous form of energy. Bursting at the seams with no banter or ‘signature’ moves by any member. There are no graphics or photos on a big screen. Just a band who is impossible to classify in any specific genre. Part Punk, part Hard Rock. Alternative ? Why not.

For The Cult themselves – it is all about a Cult. For ‘the Cult‘ who follow them, it is about following the Cult. As any outsider is aware , nobody quite understands what goes on inside a Cult except the leader. It’s probably a good thing for all parties involved. The end.
