Most people know the story of Tina Turner. Thanks largely to what is arguably the first biopic on a musician with global appeal.

‘What’s Love Got to Do with It’ – the fantastic film starring Angela Bassett, put in motion the global support for Tina Turner. A woman, who, endured and eventually overcame so much hardship. Talent was one thing – strength something entirely different.
Tina The Tina Turner Musical retells Tina’s story live and in motion. Somehow – sitting at Place des Arts and witnessing the abuse towards women and children is more nerve racking than a depiction on the big screen. Reality is living and breathing, celluloid keeps us safe and removed from it all.
Jayna Elise had big skirts to fill as Tina Turner. Demonstrating Tina’s vulnerability and toughness in the dialogue (between songs) is not easy. Singing like Tina Turner is not easy. Elise pulled it all off admirably and with conviction. Once the audience’s brains accepted Elise as Tina , the performance became Tina. The story of her life came alive. (please continue below)

The supporting cast in a Tina Turner musical may be more supporting than most musicals. The focus is on a woman who was a hero for millions. Playing very important people in Turner’s fall from and rise to Fame is essential to conveying a story as unique as Tina herself.

The cast and direction was strong enough to make people learn the story yet demure enough to make Tina the star. Musically – it is difficult to place Rock and Pop songs into a musical. Tweeks are tweeked and adjustments made for the ‘musical’ genre. The Ike and Tina Turner Revue period was generic music – wise while the Pop songs which made Turner a solo star, fared much better in a ‘musical’ format.
Tina – The Tina Turner Musical is well worth the price of admission to place oneself into moments that are part of music history. In 2025 – everyone from a certain era knows Tina and knows the songs. For those who don’t, the musical is an eye opener to a story that could be – the first #metoo movement that not only empowered Tina, but generations of women (and men) who went on to great heights. Bonus? Not every story is accompanied by foot-tapping tunes like Tina – The Tina Turner Musical
