Rick Keene Music Scene – A Special Birthday Tribute To Jerry Mercer

Someone once said; “Rock n Roll is a vicious game …”

The music business is, in general, a very vicious game. More people are used and tossed aside than dishrags at a cheap restaurant. The good die young and the bad fade away unless their souls are sold to the devil.

Jerry Mercer

Enter Mr. Jerry Mercer.

Some people have witnessed so much stuff in their lives – they forget what it is they have learned. Jerry Mercer is that guy. So much has gone in and stays, yet so much must be questioned to loosen the web surrounding the knowledge. From The Festival Express with Janis Joplin to Roy Buchanan. From April Wine to the rhythms of Cuba. Jerry Mercer has learned a lot and continues to grow.

Please listen below to a Birthday Tribute To Mr. Jerry Mercer

Rick Keene Music Scene; A Tribute to Stuart McLean

Stuart McLean will be missed …

th-7

He will be missed by his family, his coworkers and his Vinyl Cafe family. Sorely and immensely.

He will also be missed by the world of the curious and the fans of human nature.

Seldom does a storyteller come around who can tug at the heartstrings without utilizing propaganda. Without using self promotional words to advance a career.

Although his stories did further his career, it appears that career came about as accidental as the plots and twists within his tales and characters. These ‘accidents’ were the cornerstones of human and Canadian behavior.

Stuart McLean, with his ‘aw shucks’ delivery and acute humor, invited everyone who listened into a world that became part of the nation’s family. Extended relatives who, as in real life, were infuriating, funny, odd and weird. Just like in real families, blood was thicker than the water in The Vinyl Cafe and that blood will flow forever.

Please listen below as Stuart’s distinctive Canadian words blend with  equally distinctive Canadian music.

Memories created with a special soundtrack to the soul. The foundation for a lifelong affair with music.

Jazz is a four letter word …

norm5

Once upon a time, it was the coolest thing happening. All the cats were hip to be square long before Huey Lewis got news of it …

In a very long legacy, one which has laid the framework for music as we know it today, Jazz has evolved through many art forms. It was the original melting pot. Diversity was it’s middle name.

Former Montreal Expos and Drummer Warren Cromartie Talks Montreal Baseball Project and Jammin’ with RUSH ! Part Two.

Warren Cromartie is a hero in Montreal for a couple of reasons …

th-5

Not only did the Florida native help the Montreal Expos win their first birth to the post season, he single-handily, in one sweeping motion, unified baseball with Canada.

Everyone who followed baseball in 1981 remembers when ‘Cro’ grabbed the Canadian flag in Philadelphia’s Veterans Stadium and waved it for millions to understand that CANADA won a major league title.

Before The Blue Jays and Joe Carter’s blast, Warren Cromartie, Gary Carter, Tim Raines and ‘The Hawk’ were capturing baseball hearts in Canada. Not to mention a bevvy of players who endeared themselves to an entire generation of baseball fans in Montreal. Men like Valentine, Wallach, Cash, Scott, Lee, Fryman and Sosa.

th

Warren Cromartie has since become a hero yet again as he heads up The Montreal Baseball Project. An organization intent on bringing professional baseball back to Montreal.

Cromartie’s second love is music.

An accomplished drummer, ‘Cro’ has played with some pretty impressive musicians over the years and released an album in Japan. His ‘home away from home’ in Baseball and in music.

Please listen below to a great chat about the future of Baseball in Montreal and the Rock super-group Rush.

Along the way – gathering information from some of Montreal’s crème of the crop professional musicians. Rock star coaches.

Rock star nurturing.

The League of Rock Montreal – Showcasing Enters a Different Level !

Johnny was a schoolboy when he heard his first Beatle song,

‘Love me do,’ I think it was. From there it didn’t take him long.
Got himself a guitar, used to play every night,
Now he’s in a rock ‘n’ roll outfit,

And everything’s all right, don’t you know?

1108x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-342

Johnny told his mama, hey, ‘Mama, I’m goin’ away. I’m gonna hit the big time, gonna be a big star someday’, Yeah.

916x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-389

Mama came to the door with a teardrop in her eye

Johnny said, ‘Don’t cry, mama, smile and wave good-bye’.

709x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-413Don’t you know, yeah yeah, Don’t you know that you are a shooting star,
Don’t you know, don’t you know. Don’t you know that you are
a shooting star, And all the world will love you just as long,
As long as you are.

Johnny made a record, Went straight up to number one,
Suddenly everyone loved to hear him sing the song.
Watching the world go by, surprising it goes so fast.
Johnny looked around him and said, ‘Well, I made the big time at last’.

890x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-359

Don’t you know, don’t you know, Don’t you know that you are

a shooting star,
Don’t you know, oh, yeah, Don’t you know that you are
a shooting star, yeah,
And all the world will love you just as long,
As long as you are, a shooting star.

981x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-416Don’t you know that you are a shooting star, Don’t you know, yeah,
Don’t you know that you are a shooting star,
And all the world will love you just as long, As long you are you.

Johnny died one night, died in his bed, Bottle of whiskey,
sleeping tablets by his head. Johnny’s life passed him by like a
warm summer day, If you listen to the wind you can still hear him play

1257x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-188

Oh oh oh, Don’t you know that you are a shooting star,

Don’t you know, yeah, don’t you know’, Don’t you know that
you are a shooting star,
Don’t you know, yeah,
Don’t you know that you are a shooting star,
Don’t you, don’t you,
don’t you, don’t you,
Don’t you know, don’t you
know, oh, yeah, you are,
Yeah, a shooting star, yeah, oh
oh oh oh oh……
Don’t you, don’t you know
that you are a shooting star,
Don’t you don’t you know……

from Shooting Star – lyrics and song by Paul Rodgers

816x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-282

He rocked his way through yesterday, lord he thought he had a chance
He played guitar and wrote some tunes, of love and romance
He did his share of travelin’, like a dog without a home
A fugitive who would rather give, a star that never shone

949x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-219

Isn’t it a pity, isn’t it a shame
No one ever warned the boy

Rock n’ roll is a vicious game, oh yeah

1280x712-league-of-rock-showcase2-208

He said he wouldn’t get led around, or caught up in the games
Or end up in a gallery, of faces with no names
And rock ‘n’ roll was in his soul, and music was a friend
He recorded a song that made us sing along, and he was on the road again

751x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-425

Isn’t it a pity, isn’t it a shame

No one ever warned the boy

Rock n’ roll is a vicious game, oh oh, oh yeah, oh oh

993x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-468

Stage fright, ooh, and long black.                 limousines

He’s pushing himself a way too hard, or so it seems

He opened up his heart to us, he gave us what he could

We sympathized and harmonized, he made us all feel good

But it’s funny how those things can change, and time can pass us by

Songs that moved us so easily, no longer make us cry

1104x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-424

Now isn’t it a pity, isn’t it a shame
No one ever warned the boy

Rock n’ roll is a vicious game, oh oh, oh
Oh yeah, oh, oh oh oh, oh, yeah, yeah yeah yeah
My my my, rock ‘n roll is a vicious game, yeah
Rock ‘n’ roll, rock ‘n’ roll, yeah, yeah, yeah, ooh

Rock n Roll is a Vicous Game

SONGWRITER
MYLES FRANCIS GOODWYN

949x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-045

If I could stick my pen in my heart

And spill it all over the stage
Would it satisfy ya, would it slide on by ya
Would you think the boy is strange? Ain’t he strange?
If I could win ya, if I could sing ya
A love song so divine
Would it be enough for your cheating heart
If I broke down and cried? If I cried?

1058x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-036

I said I know it’s only rock ‘n roll but I like it
I know it’s only rock ‘n roll but I like it, like it, yes, I do
Oh, well, I like it, I like it, I like it

894x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-033

I said can’t you see that this old boy has been a lonely?

If I could stick a knife in my heart
Suicide right on stage
Would it be enough for your teenage lust
Would it help to ease the pain? Ease your brain?
If I could dig down deep in my heart
Feelings would flood on the page
Would it satisfy ya, would it slide on by ya
Would ya think the boy’s insane? He’s insane

1017x1280-league-of-rock-showcase2-059

I said I know it’s only rock ‘n roll but I like it
I said I know it’s only rock’n roll but I like it, like it, yes, I do
Oh, well, I like it, I like it, I like it

1280x853-league-of-rock-showcase2-013

I said can’t you see that this old boy has been a lonely?
And do ya think that you’re the only girl around?
I bet you think that you’re the only woman in town

I said I know it’s only rock ‘n roll but I like it
I said I know it’s only rock ‘n roll but I like it
I said I know it’s only rock ‘n roll but I like it, like it, yes, I do
Oh, well, I like it, I like it. I like it..

Barbra Lica Is ‘ Still Learning’. A Great Thing for Music Lovers of All Genres. Full Two Part Interview

Once upon a time, there were four categories of music to play if you wanted to reach radio stardom

Rock, Country, Jazz and Blues.

th-5

There were other genres such as Classical and Opera yet face it, the stars of the latter ( minus a handful) did not reach the same global popularity as the stars of the first four genres.

Somewhere along the way, music became more complicated. World sounds entered the fray as television and radio reached the far corners of the globe. Musicians starting adding sounds and rhythms to their repertoires. As quick as the Joker was on the sideline in a cast,  many sub-genres emerged.

Competition became fierce as record labels and  store owners scampered to label and sell as much music as possible. Sadly – making a living as a musician became more difficult if ‘ the rules ‘ were not followed.

th-3

Singer / songwriter Barbra Lica  (inadvertently) is changing all the rules.

Her third album has a catalog of yesterday combined with the freshness of today. A musical trip without ‘tripping’ over politically correct labeling. A welcome relief for any music fan as the auditory senses bask in the rays of song.

A Must Listen as Junkyard Villain Rocks The Cause ! Saturday November 19th. Be There or Be Square!

Canadians are a friendly bunch.

A place where citizens practice apologies rather than hate. Slap-shots in lieu of slander. Snowball fights instead of ignorance.

In short – Canadians are kind, helpful and giving. You know … polite.

If there is one Canadian who exemplifies what it is to be Canadian, it is The Junkyard Villain.

What’s that? Junkyard Villain? Is this a professional wrestler who seduces with his flashy smile and quick hands? A friendly hulk of a man who then proceeds to smash his victims into a bleeding mass of humanity? Not quite.

th-9

Junkyard Villain has an alter ego.

Junkyard Villain is Percy Hart. A fun loving type of guy with a heart of gold. Percy – in recent years, has realized two things. One, life is too short not to give back and two; music is a good thing with enormous healing powers.

Please listen below as Percy aka Junkyard Villain – explains his first album and his involvement in this weekend’s

Everyone knows the hits. ‘Breakdown’,Here Comes my Girl’, ‘Refugee’, ‘Freefallin’. etc etc …

Tom Petty ( in case addition is not your strongpoint) has more hits and has been around longer than any band since the mid-seventies except for The Rolling Stones. Petty and his Heartbreakers have arrived in 2016 as legends.

th (3)

Watching the DVD ( directed by the legendary Peter Bogdanovich), three things arrive quickly. A trio of thoughts as clear as a Big Mac, Fries and a Coke.  One – Tom Petty is a very cool dude, two – Petty is one tough Motherf*cker and finally; Tom Petty is a songwriter’s songwriter.

The film excavates the Heartbreaker’s history. Unearthing gems of information straight from Petty’s voice. Tom, in a strange Lewis Carroll kind of way, narrates his story. Vintage footage the only interruption in Petty’s disclosures. Voiced only as Petty can. Cool, dry and in the true form of someone who loves his ‘Mary Jane’.

Fitting since – it is his story …

th (4)

‘Mudcrutch’ was the name of the original band.

Petty and his Gainsville, Florida buddies, arriving at legendary status in a town bordered by Alligators. Mudcrutch even forming it’s very own festival to accommodate the fans. A ‘backyard festival that became so large – it had to be cancelled due to ‘success’. A twist of irony which was the precursor to the start of Petty and the soon-to-be-Heartbreakers.

th (6)

Tom Petty along with some members of the band ( Mudcrutch) headed to LA to get a record deal. Mission accomplished as the group landed not one but two offers. The returned to Gainesville, sold off their possessions and headed West toward fame and fortune. Two things which appeared imminent. A pair of non-concrete entities which arrived with some surprises.

th

Without giving too much away, their story began with a changing of the name, early success in England and a historic battle with their record company. Petty, upon learning he did not own the publishing rights to his songs, predated his own lyrics. Petty stood up and said;

” I won’t back down …’

At a time when most bands would not ‘bite the hand that feeds them ‘, Petty was as rebellious as a band leader as he was as a young boy. Fighting tooth and nail to keep what was rightfully his. Interestingly, the press he received for his battles, inadvertently worked for him. The adage; ‘There’s no such thing as bad press’ becoming the invisible motto for his legal struggles.

th (1)

The outcome was positive and unprecedented in the music business. Petty was officially an outlaw.

The album ‘Damn the Torpedoes’ ( which became a mega -seller) was written during his court battles  (hence the title) and The Heartbreakers never looked back. The momentum along with Petty’s uncanny songwriting ability, instilling Rock n Roll back into the consciences of a FM radio format that was struggling.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers saved Rock n Roll.

th (7)

The nearly four hour long DVD spins the yarns. The drug – fuelled period following the band’s reception of their first triple zero cheques. The musical infighting of the band. The workaholic Petty constantly writing while his bandmates; in Petty’s words – ‘Chased women or whatever it was they did’. Everything imagined by  non-fans is magnified, adjusted and added in a fascinating story of a Rock n Roll band. An historical journey into one of America’s greatest poets and songwriters.

th (8)

Like any tale of the guitar string, facts emerge into the personal history of men and women who obtain ‘fame’. It is human nature to explore, identify and analyze those who achieve greatness and / or obscurity aka ‘ ‘Rags to riches’ or riches to rags’.

Bogdanovich’s microscope discovers Petty’s demons. His beatings both verbal and physical at the hands of his Father. An experience which made Petty both ‘ambitious’ and ‘tough’. A ‘dual’ personality which gave him the intensity to fight his battles. Unearthing this fact also identifies two factors among musicians in general who hit it big. Petty and his story – par for the stage.

th (2)

Bono, Hendrix, Joplin, RichardsPetty  – the list is impressive and long. A common denominator among music stars is they either had bad relations with their Fathers or lost their Moms at a young age. A fascinating discovery of the psyches of many stars who have touched the world’s souls through music and words.

Poetic license for their own pain.

th (10)

The remainder of the DVD explores the music. Live and studio footage from Tom’s long and winding career punctuated by tales of songwriting, musicianship and relationships within music. It is an exemplary tale of ‘how to stay together’ as a unit.

More historic footage emerges with The Travelling Wilburys front and center. Arguably, the most talented group of musicians and songwriters assembled in a studio. Legend upon legend. Learning and growing off each other. A turning point for Petty and a main reason the Heartbreakers survived and became relevant post – MTV. Tom citing that experience as a refresher course for his songwriting skills.

th (11)

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: ‘Runnin’ Down a Dream’ ( available on Netflix) is a must-watch for music fans both passing and profound.

Fans will discover new facts and non-fans will become fans. At the least, non-fans will receive Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers in a different light. An admiration earned by a bunch of Florida boys whose passion and commitment carried them through thick and thin.

It’s nice to discover stuff you thought you knew …
