Rick Keene Music Scene – Paul DesLauriers is Filled With ‘Bounce’ on the New Album. Part Two

One of the best guitar players in Montreal is in a zone.

Paul DesLauriers has seen and grown a lot since he first picked up a guitar and started playing. Multiple Maple Blues awards, winner of the Quebec to Memphis Blues Challenge which led to second place at the IBC Blues competition held in Memphis, multiple critically acclaimed albums, an educator and a seasoned touring musician. What could come next?

Armed with a ‘new look’ and a recent marriage – DesLauriers, along with his band (Sam Harrison drums, Alec McElcheran Bass), have released an album called Bounce. It is a disc recorded with a live feel. A distinct flavoring of three musicians knowing each other and what level they can bring it to. A seasoning of a Blues / Rock stew.

Please listen below to Part Two of my chat with Paul about music, the new album Bounce and the upcoming show November 30th at Le Ministere

Return to Grace; Elvis Unfortunately – Has Left the Building ! Montreal Review

If attending ‘Return to Grace’ at Place des Arts over the course of the next week or so, close your eyes.

Something somewhat common takes place. Steve Michaels sings and sounds just like his alter ego; Elvis Presley. Songs heard a thousand times before pierce memories from far inside brains. Transporting people to the fifties, sixties and the seventies. Elvis, audibly and with eyes closed shut – never died.

unnamed

Open your eyes.

Elvis is still dead.

‘Return to Grace’ is an attempt to bring Presley back to life and more importantly, introduce entire generations to a figure known to them as; ‘That Fat Guy’. Youtube and tales from parents and / or Grandparents cannot bring the legend back to life.

Live or dead …

2014-07-13-13.40.09

The production team of Return to Grace do an outstanding job. The entire evening is periodically punctuated with a narrative. Explaining both historic events of Elvis’ lifetime and Elvis’ own historic events.

From Sun Records, an honorable Army appearance, his 68′ Comeback special and his very historic first- of- a- kind satellite broadcast from Hawaii. Elvis’ time capsule has been unearthed and thankfully, the movie version of Presley was not found.

A quarter of the way into the show, somewhere before or after ‘Return to Sender’, a magical thing happens. Michaels becomes Elvis.  The crowd’s snobby ‘ No One is Elvis’ attitude disappears and Michaels himself gets into the role. In fairness, Michaels is in character from the get-go, the audience is not.  A combination of the songs and theatrics ( dancers, back – up singers, choreography  and costumes)  kills the most ardent Ebenezer music fan. Michael’s mannerisms, voice and gestures, closer to the real Elvis than Priscilla was in the past few months of her marriage to Elvis.

If Robert Downey Jr. is Ironman – Steve Michaels is ‘The King’ …

LadiesInRed-2014-07-13-14.09.58

Michaels’ is the star in a role which must be one pressure cooker. After all, Presley was one of the most unique characters not just in the past fifty years,  a deity of the ages.

Michaels’ voice carries the tunes and his banter cracks the jokes. Uncanningly duplicating Elvis’ balancing act of confidence and shyness. Michaels nails the Devil and the Angel inside of Elvis. The good and evil. Any tribute to Elvis would be void without Presley’s personality. Presley’s persona as much  part of his fame as his fame was to his persona. Michaels and his team, the perfect students in a Graceland classroom. Disciples of Elvis’ church.

2014-07-13-13.44.20

All the hits were onboard. ‘Jailhouse Rock’, ‘In the Ghetto‘. Teddy Bear’, Suspicious Minds’, ‘Lonesome Tonight’ and ‘Love Me Tender’. Just some  of the timeless songs which Elvis ( Michaels) bestowed upon his adoring public at Salle Wilfred Pelletier.

‘American Trilogy’ – done faithfully from Elvis; Aloha from Hawaii, stole the second part of the evening. A recreation both physically ( jumpsuit)  and vocally.  A powerful tune in the satellite special, more powerful in person. The words; ‘Glory Glory Hallelujah’ sending shivers through spines bent over in awe. The backing vocals, male and female,  providing the ‘spirit’ of the Hawaii show spiritually, religiously and  righteous.

649108fa-3dd6-47fb-b5b6-c4a6483d353f

If ‘The Steve Michaels’ Special’ does anything, it fulfills a legacy through music and performance. Reminding ‘the punters’ of a time when showmanship was backed up by musicianship.

Elvis Aaron Presley used to put on shows that made eyes and ears stay open. Steve Micheals  duplicates it.

Eyes and ears very wide open …

Steve Hill; Hendrix, Guitar Tuning and Volume Three?

Volume three cannot be far off …

Following two very successful solo albums; Steve Hill of Trois Rivieres, Quebec is living a life of renewed interest and respect.

Respect is what this guy deserves ...

Not too many musicians take the hard way out. Undertaking a solo project is one thing – taking the stage as a one man band is another entirely. Playing guitar, singing original compositions, playing bass, snare and high-hat; no simple task.

Steve Hill will tell you this. Right now as a matter of fact …

‘Angel’ in our Hearts …

Angel has come a long way. Literally and figuratively.

This Dorval, Qc.  lady – born with the voice of a non-angel, has learned many things in her life. Finally – she gets it. The accolades do as well.

Female artist of the year in 2014 at The Maple Blues Awards may not be a Grammy yet for Angel; it may as well be. A Blues-bred upbringing was pushed to the side for too many years. In 2013 -14, the Blues resurfaced to give Angel success and peace.

A little ‘peace’ of her heart maybe …?

In the right corner, wearing a brown top and jeans – Dawn Tyler Watson. A woman who posesses the voice of an angel. Vocal chords blessed from deep within …

On the left, bearded and loaded with guitar fingers talented beyond comprehension – Paul Deslauriers. A man who should be writing the score for spaghetti westerns 2013.

The duo had just recently completed an album and they appeared on stage to promote it. ‘What a debut’ if the response of the audience that evening was any indication …

The show commenced with trepidation, musically and the amount of love being tossed around the L’Astral. Well – that did not last long.

‘Thrill Me Up’ broke the ice and the energy kept filling the glasses. The song is one of the new ones on the pair’s  album. A song which has caught on in the Ottawa region and has become a staple on the airwaves. An upbeat kind of song with Paul and Dawn’s voices matching intermittently. A tune which keeps great company by blues standards with a chorus to die for.

The audience began to tune in and another new song; Small Ceremonies, was the backbreaker. A beautifully sung ballad. Watson’s inner child playing nonchalantly with Deslaurier’s tender riffs. A bedtime tale meant to be serenaded to a bride or groom to be…

Watson’s fiance was on hand back then among the patrons, amorous banter took center stage as ‘Miss’ Dawn urged the audience to appreciate the one special person in their lives. All the while –  while encouraging the single people to retain hope. A beautiful message from a beautiful songstress and person.

The Beatles’ song ‘ Can’t buy Me Love‘ is on the new album and was just one of three eye – catching covers carried out by the duo. ‘The Rain Song‘ and ‘ Going to California‘, originally penned by Mssrs Page and Plant of Led Zeppelin fame, brought the house down. Renditions very worthy of calls from Zep themselves.

The jaw – dropping moment came halfway through the second set. Jacques Brel‘s song; ‘Ne me Quitte Pas‘, made famous by none other than Edith Piaf – may have brought tears to some people’s eyes. A fact which was pointed out by a standing ovation upon completion.

Paul Deslauriers and Dawn Tyler Watson go together as two songbirds should. Deslauriers, along with Steve Hill – is the best guitarist in the province of Quebec and maybe in Canada. Watson has few equals in the voice department.

Sometimes duels are friendly …
