The songs of Simon and Garfunkel were in Quebec last evening as part of The Simon and Garfunkel Story. Rock / Folk’s most successful songwriting duo showcased in a very interesting and entertaining fashion.

To most people, Simon and Garfunkel are like Tupperware. Everyone knows about them, everybody likes them but very few aware of where they came from. ‘Tom and Jerry‘ was the first act the duo were part of and school is where they met. Music brought them together and music tore them apart. Make that the business of music tore them apart.

All the above is narrated by Taylor Bloom ( Simon) and Benjamin Cooley ( Garfunkel) between songs while videos and photos provide the backdrop. Posture wise, vocal wise and appearance wise – from a certain distance, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel are before your eyes. Vocally – up close, the real deal is taking place.

It is a romp through history as the songbook of Paul and Art travel the innocence of the early sixties to the demonic times of Vietnam. Woodstock happens and peace and love enter ironically catching up to what Simon and Garfunkel were doing a decade before. Lyrics, verses and harmonies set Paul and Art apart from the music pack then and continue to do so in 2022. Lots of groups sang (sing) harmony yet few duos pulled (pull) it off like the two friends from Queens, New York.

Aside from the solo acoustic songs performed by Bloom, the backing band is a monster lurking behind the duo ready to pounce on cue. Zach Kamins on keys is a wizard, Bob Sale on drums showcases why he is a much sought after player in studio and on stage in the music industry. Joshua Vasquez – a guitar player skilled in technique and feel and Jay Hemphill keeps everything grounded with a bottom end unlike most. Together they fill in the sounds of Simon and Garfunkel accurately and crisp. Not overwhelming nor underwhelming. Just perfect.

Simon and Garfunkel are like The Beatles. Their time together was short but their music endures. Their songwriting skills influenced just about everybody who came after. The Simon and Garfunkel Story tells the tale through a catalog both immense and profound. Paul and Art should be proud of themselves – times two.
