Musicals can be hit and miss.
Often – something is either not quite right or the entire show is hijacked by a bad cast member or a bad song. This is definitely not the case with Pretty Woman The Musical.
How could you possibly go wrong with Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance writing the music? How could an error be achieved with a story from Garry Marshall and J.F. Lawton ? When Julia Roberts and Richard Gere parlay two movie characters into the souls of a generation’s memory and those characters are as lovable on a musical stage as on screen – how could you go wrong?

Vivian Ward ( Ellie Baker ) and Edward Lewis (Chance Wolfe) are the stars. The hooker and the rich businessman. The Roberts and Gere who fall in love under unusual circumstances. Baker is a dynamo as Vivian with as much sass as a streetwise call-girl, a voice as angelic as it is powerful and a charm that anyone would want to marry. Wolfe – perfect as the business – only man void of any fun or humanity as he seeks the mighty dollar. Like Baker, Wolfe’s vocals able to stroke tender ballads and push powerful notes to their peak.

The third star of the musical is Kit De Luca played by Rae Davenport. Vivian’s best friend and fellow call girl inspires the production with profound words (wisdom) and one of the most incredible vocal performances to come from Detroit. Kit strengthens Vivian’s naivete yet in the end – it is Vivian who strengthens Kit. A well written balancing act takes place with equal empathy and admiration to both women from the punter’s point of view.

Aside from the great rags to riches story and the amazing vocals of all the performers – what makes Pretty Woman The Musical work is the believable casting. Starting with Vivian and all through the web of colors and shadows, the feeling is real. The audience is Jimmy Stewart in the film Rear Window and the performers are in several windows. Like real life, reflections in windows can sometimes blur the visibility of what is happening inside. This temporary blindness in turn makes you realize something is happening within yourself.
Pretty Woman The Musical makes you dream and if you don’t dream during this musical ‘romance’ – the lyrics and music in your life must be as great as Adams and Vallance’s.
