Rick Keene Music Scene – George Thorogood Isn’t ‘Lonesome’ on His First Solo Record

Bad to The Bone …

Who on this planet does not know that opening riff followed by the words in the song ‘Bad To The Bone’? Chances are – aliens circling overhead in their spacecraft hear it every time George Thorogood and his Destroyers play it live.

It has been a long and storied career for Thorogood – starting as a hard working solo act making a name for himself on the club scene. John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, The Rolling Stones and Howlin’ Wolf – just a few of the men who influenced George to pick up a guitar and start playing.

15 million albums sales and more than 8,000 live shows later – George has released his first solo record paying respect to all the Blues guys that influenced hm.

Please listen below to my chat with Lonesome George about the new album and his upcoming show with The Destroyers Aug.23rd at

Rick Keene Music Scene – Justin Saladino is Brilliant with Latest Album ‘A Fool’s Heart’

Justin Saladino is smart.

Too often, Blues guitarists remain true to the Blues and it confines them. Pigeon holes their talent and next thing you know, twenty years have passed and another whisky shot comes there way at four in the morning.

Few (over the years) have come to the realization that Blues may be the necessary classroom but diversity is the only way out of high school and into University.

Rick Keene Music Scene – Steve Hill Is ‘Live’ and Well !

The prodigal son has returned home. Sorta …

Trois Rivieres native and guitar player extraordinaire Steve Hill is a busy guy. Following a very successful jaunt to Europe – Hill is home for a little bit before heading off to England and Germany once more.

It was while he was ‘home’ and doing a gig in the province of Quebec that Steve finally recorded a long awaited live album.

“The One-Man Blues Rock Band” is the name of the album and it was a project that Hill wanted to get right. Hence the nine studio album delay. A live album can be a tricky thing when work dictates reality and time is short.

Please listen below to my chat with Steve about the live album, master classes and his upcoming gig opening up for ZZ Top in Quebec City in August.

Rick Keene Music Scene – Myles Goodwyn Has The Blues and That’s a Good Thing! Part One and Two

April Wine are forever etched in the consciences of Canadian music fans.

When original bassist Jim Henman asked  his former band-mate from Woody’s Termites to join April Wine; everything changed. For the better.

What followed was one of the great success stories for a Canadian band. Hit after hit turned into one of the best live shows this Country has seen.

Principal singer, songwriter and leader Myles Goodwyn set the bar high for all Canadian songwriters in Rock n Roll. Goodwyn, also set the bar high for Rock ballads as well.

Fittingly, his autobiography is titled  “Just Between You and Me’,  a mirror  name for the video and song which superimposed April Wine onto stages South of the Border and worldwide. The song which made April Wine a household name in North America.

Myles traveled backwards to tell the tale of his years inside and outside of April Wine. Now he is travelling backwards once again.

The Blues were an essential part of Goodwyn’s musical fabric and the sixty-nine year old musician is paying homage to the genre which helped ‘sculpt’ him as a young man growing up in New Brunswick.

Please listen below to my chat with Myles as we touch on the early days of April Wine and Myles’ new disc;

Myles Goodwyn and Friends of the Blues.

The album is out March 2nd

Rick Keene Music Scene – Emma Frank Recruits Top Musicians for Her New Disc; Ocean Av.

Emma Frank came and went …

The Bostonian -turned-Montrealer-turned New Yorker was a rose in Montreal’s flower garden the brief time she lived here. One of those voices that could place an infant to sleep or raise the hairs on the back of Nina Simone’s neck.

Emma has turned her career towards the Big Apple with a new life, new / old friends and a new relationship. Did I mention the new record? Ocean Av?

Please listen below to a few tunes from the new album and words from Emma on the recording    ( life? ) process.
