Rick Keene Music Scene -April Wine’s Co-Founder Jim Henman Has Had Enough of School Shootings and Is Doing Something About It !

Children are the future …

Imagine how the world will appear in ten years? Imagine there is no safe zone at all? Homes and schools – the two places where kids should feel safe. A pair of sacred turfs now affected more and more by gun violence in the United States of America.

One of the co – founders of April Wine, Jim Henman , has been affected by the senseless shootings south of the border. He was so profoundly moved by the acts of violence – he wrote a song.

The song ‘Some of These Children’ is a poignant and stirring take on events that have affected everyone. Parents, teachers, relatives and the entire world.

Uncomfortable numb as they walk and continue their lives in shock and disbelief.

Jim Henman is donating fifty percent of all sales from the song to The Boys And Girls Club of Greater Halifax. This is a start to not only help the kids in Nova Scotia – to also send a message globally that us humans have had enough.

Please listen below to my chat with Jim and hear the song ‘Some of These Children’. Please share this as much as possible …

Rick Keene Music Scene – Paolo Stante ; The Next Generation of Montreal Guitarists

Practice makes perfect …

For guitarist Paolo Stante – the less he thinks – the more he feels the music.

Just prior to the release of his third disc; At It Again – that is the essence of Paolo’s music. Experience through gigging and writing has brought less panic to Stante’s craft and in turn, At It Again is his most complete album thus far.

Please have a listen below to my chat with Paolo and discover some very good tunes and masterful guitar work.

Rick Keene Music Scene – Carla Bruni ‘Covers’ Montreal

Sometimes, one does not know what to expect from an artist.

Model / actress / singer / songwriter Carla Bruni is one of those artists.

On the heels of her latest album French Touch – the native of Italy and wife of former President of France Nicolas Sarkozy, elegantly wowed L’Olympia on Sunday night. Song by song. Cover by cover.

French Touch is Bruni’s fifth album. Predominately, her original compositions are French. Historically, Bruni’s originals are well crafted beautiful ballads with seats on the European charts. A sold out venue in Montreal was not a surprise and the French / Italian and English singer delivered what the folks wanted.

Le chemin des rivières, J’arrive à toi, L’amoureuse, Le plus beau du quartier and Tout le monde. Songs sung by a songbird backed by a band who are headliners in their own right. Bruni’s vocals at times sweet, at times strong. A twenty year career in France not by accident.

Her latest album was the interesting part of her Montreal appearance. It’s an album of covers and Carla has recharged them to an almost unrecognizable chant. None more so than AC DC’s Highway to Hell.

Much like former back up singer to the Stones Lisa Fischer, Bruni has taken classic Rock tunes and increased their values as songs. Miss You (The Stones), Moon River ( Mancini), The Winner Takes It All (ABBA) and Crazy ( Willie Nelson) – just a few of the songs that sound familiar but not the same. Bruni’s renditions prove once and for all, a good song can stand the test of any genre. Lumps of clay can be remodeled to suit the mood.

Combined with French ballads ( one Italian ), the covers added mystery and vibrancy to what would otherwise be a very quiet ( too quiet ) evening. Bruni was no nonsense and to the point in describing the songs with intermittent antidotes thrown in. Her charm and class in full bloom.

Half way through, the audience still did not know what to expect.

Rick Keene Music Scene – Discovering Leonard Cohen

For many people – Leonard Cohen was an old guy who wrote the song Hallelujah.

Visiting the exhibit honoring the late poet / songwriter / philosopher is an eye and ear opener. Only the folks who are deeply embedded in music and / or above the Mason- Dixon line in age are not surprised.

La Musee d”Art Contemporain, adjacent to Place des Arts in the core of Downtown Montreal, is housing the exhibit which runs until April 9th. Leonard Cohen, the globetrotting student of pretty much everything, is once again – back in Montreal. Sadly – this time, it’s his final resting place. Happily – he’s home.

Kara Blake, a Montreal – born filmmaker, offers just one of the video channel projection forms celebrating Cohen’s life. Just one of the exhibit’s classrooms coughing up knowledge on the late Montrealer.

Cohen’s voice is upfront discussing various subjects in what seems like a one on one conversation with each visitor to the museum.
Love, humanity and spirituality.
The profound observations and introspective ideas which made Cohen the most celebrated poet in the past fifty years. A visitor cannot leave the film unaffected.

Turn the corner and suddenly, Leonard Cohen’s study is your study.

A replica of Cohen’s ‘garden of Zen’ is both haunting and inspiring. The room could be anyone’s room. The space, the decor, the laptop, the keyboard – all items could be the same tools a five year old kid may use for his future musings. The musings of the future no different than the past with a different outcome.

Then there is the music.

Interspersed  with Cohen’s words and antidotes – the music and songs transcend decades. Bird on a Wire sung by a mid twenties, middle age and older Cohen. A trip backwards yet into the present past. A fascinating viewing and insight into how much the man’s passion and instinct never changed. The frame became rusty yet the engine still roared.

Wall -to-wall concert footage with state of the art sound. Light enough at times to witness the faces of the visitors. Eyes growing into saucers with each new lesson learned from the mouth and guitars of Cohen.

To explain the entire exhibit on any page would be a crime. An injustice to the many artists and artisans who have created an exhibit worthy of a day spent. Two days if the curiosity of knowledge is profound. Three if curiosity of Cohen is acute. A week if the thirst for words a main course.

Hallelujah
