Rick Keene Music Scene: The Rolling Stones; Foreign Tongues Review
In their early 80s, The Rolling Stones have managed to do what no Rock / Pop / Country / Blues / Dance band has done in the past thirty years.
A staggering effort complete with multiple genres.
Their 2023 album Hackney Diamonds won a Grammy for Rock album of the year and that record, pales in comparison to the new album Foreign Tongues.
The Stones, in their career, have been successful in multiple genres mostly because while other artists just ‘tried’ to play different sounds, the Stones hung out with the greats in all genres. Muddy Waters to Chuck Berry to James Brown to Gram Parsons and everyone in between and after.
As kids they were surrounded by the Great American Songbook. As teens they were immersed with the forefathers of The Blues ( Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James, Robert Johnson ) and the Country sounds of Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams and George Jones. As adults – they surrounded themselves with Peter Tosh, Bob Marley and The Wingless Angels. They walked the streets of New York city seeking out Punk Rockers in the late seventies. Studio 54 was their home during the Disco craze.
Through their original drummer Charlie Watts, they were schooled in Jazz.
They inhaled music.
On the new album Foreign Tongues – we are breathing in musical history from the very unique lungs of the The Rolling Stones’ and their original interpretations of everything they’ve absorbed in the past eighty-two years.
The Rolling Stones really cannot get satisfaction. In their 64th year as a band and seven straight decades with a top ten album of original material (Hackney Diamonds), they sound as fierce and energetic as they did ‘painting the world black ‘ and chasing outsiders ‘off their cloud’.
